Chitin and Chitosan -Highlights from the Chitin Symposium 2002 in Acapulco, Mexico This special issue of Macromolecular Bioscience deals with chitin and chitosan, the unique and very abundant aminoglucans which occur in a wide variety of marine and terrestrial organisms. It contains a collection of articles that emerged from the 2 nd Iberoamerican Symposium on Chitin (II SIAQ), held in Acapulco, Mexico, Nov. 10-15, 2002. The symposium, forming an integral part of the 8 th Latin American Symposium on Polymers (SLAP'2002), was attended by 220 of internationally highly recognized scientists from all continents, the majority coming from Central-and South American countries.
