✦ Synopsis

China: Shanghai Cabot -carbon black

Shanghai Cabot is on target to commission the third production line at its Shanghai carbon black early in 2004. According to 'CW', capacity will be raised by 50,000 tonnes/y to 120,000 tonnes/y, but 'JCW' reports that capacity is to be raised to 130,000 tonnes/y, in line with earlier reports. (See also 'Focus on Pigments ', Mar 2003, 4). Shanghai Cabot is a joint venture company, owned 70% by Cabot Corp and 30% by Shanghai Coking Chemical Co. The expansion will confirm the company's position as the largest carbon black producer in China. According to 'CW', China's total carbon black capacity is already about 1 M tonnes/y. According to 'JCW', China's total carbon black consumption is currently of the order of 800,000-900,000 tonnes/y and it is forecast to exceed 1.5 M tonnes/y by 2008.
