Un joven sin historia ni pasión precisa excepto el amor por el jazz se encuentra sumergido en una aventura cuyas causas y reglas se le escapan, una historia de detectives raídos y torpes, una secta religiosa preocupantemente flipada, estafadores tan retorcidos que son incapaces de distinguir entre la verdad y las ilusiones que se fabrican, un loro muy, pero que muy instruido, una hermosa extranjera que se esfuma apenas entrevista, peleas, tiroteos, persecuciones, puertas falsas y pasajes secretos, asesinos impávidos... Toda la panoplia de la novela negra pero tratada con gran inteligencia, libertad, desenvoltura y sentido del humor en un libro desconcertante en el que no obstante se adivina de inmediato que lo esencial es la literatura. Tal como el autor precisaba en una entrevista, «Cherokee es una novela de aventuras... e incluso de amor. No me gusta que se la catalogue como novela policíaca, aunque haya armas, persecuciones, indagaciones. Pertenece a un ámbito más amplio. El eje es alguien que busca a una mujer. El hecho de que él mismo sea perseguido por diferentes categorías socioprofesionales (risas) constituye un movimiento de doble persecución».
