From time to time an interesting item will appear telling how some controversial point in archaeological research has been cleared up by the aid of chemistry. It is somewhat like eating a multi-course meal with each course a dessert, to read H. W. BASSETT'S paper: "Chemistry as the Handmaid of Archaeology." Here, in rapid succession, facts concerning the origins of many arts are given as evidence of chemistry's ability to unlock riddles older than the Sphinx.
