Tungsten Hexachloride (WCl 6 ), a Highly Efficient and Chemoselective Catalyst for Acetalization of Carbonyl Compounds.

-Aldehydes and ketones (I) are converted chemoselectively into their corresponding 1,3-dioxanes (V) or diethyl acetals (III) in the presence of catalytic amounts of tungsten hexachloride.
