✦ Synopsis

Transformation of Penicillins into 3-Substituted ∆3-Cephems Through Addition/Cyclization of Allenecarboxylates.

-A new synthesis of the title compounds (IV) is performed by a sequential addition/cyclization reaction of the allenecarboxylate (II) with heteroatom nucleophiles. In the absence of heteroatom nucleophiles, the cephems (V) or (VI) are formed. The formation of (IX) is performed by the aid of a catalytic amount of thiols.
