Toluene and Naphthalene Dioxygenase-Catalyzed Sulfoxidation of Alkyl Aryl Sulfides.
-A series of alkyl sulfides (I) and (III) are metabolized, using selected strains of the soil bacterium P. putida containing either toluene dioxygenase (UV4) or naphthalene dioxygenase (NCIMB 8859), to give chiral sulfoxides. In some cases enantiocomplementary is observed, cf. (Ia). The stereoselectivity appears to be mainly dependant on enzyme-catalyzed asymmetric sulfoxidation rather than on kinetic resolution. -(BOYD, D. R.;
