The Synthesis of Di(hydroxyalkyl) Substituted Bicyclic Guanidines.

-The enantiomerically pure guanidine (XIII) is synthesized by a route based on a methodology developed by Schmidtchen for bicyclic guanidines containing two differently protected hydroxyalkyl side chains. The desired intermediate (XI) is prepared by coupling of isocyanate (IX) and amine (X). Both are available from L-methionine and L-glutamic acid, respectively. The epimer of (XIII), (XIV), is synthesized by an analogous route starting from D-methionine.
