✦ Synopsis

The Sulfidation of Fe-15 wt% Y and Fe-30 wt% Y in H2-H2S Mixtures at 600-800 • C. -The addition of yttrium to Fe leads to a considerable reduction of the corrosion rate of iron. However, the two alloys corrode much more rapidly than pure Y. On both alloys complex scales are observed consisting of an outer layer of pure FeS, an intermediate region containing a mixture of compounds of the two metals, and an inner region of internal sulfidation of yttrium. No Y depletion is developed beneath the region of internal attack, while Y remains in the alloy consumption region. Due to the low solubility of yttrium in iron no continuous layer of yttrium is formed which would prevent the sulfidation of iron completely. -(NIU, Y.
