The Nitration of Styrenes by Nitric Acid in Dichloromethane.
-Reaction kinetics and product distribution of the title reaction are examined. Reactions occur in the alkene moiety via carbocationic or radical transition states (increase of (Ib)) with an abrupt change in the major reaction product from type (II) to type (III) as the substituent R becomes more electron withdrawing. Of particular interest is the intermediate polar effect of the chloro substituent in (Ib), generating a product mixture with products of type (II) and (III) as major compounds besides (IV) and (V). -(LEWIS, R.
