The First Stereoselective Palladium-Catalyzed Cyclocarbonylation of β,γ-Substituted Allylic Alcohols.
-A catalytic method allowing the synthesis of α,β-substituted-γ-butyrolactones from the title alcohols in modest to good yields is presented. In most cases, this transformation occurs with complete stereoselectivity since (E)-allylic alcohols are exclusively converted into the trans-lactones. Depending on the structure of the allylic alcohol, alkenes or carboxylic acids can be formed in a side reaction which became in some cases, e.g. for (X) and (XIII), the main reaction pathway. -(BRUNNER,
