Ta5Se1.2Te1.8 -A Tetrahedrally Close-Packed Metal-Rich Layer Structure. -The novel title compound is synthesized by reaction of TaSe2 and TaTe2 with Ta at 1540 β€’ C and characterized by single-crystal XRD. The structure (triclinic, P1, Z = 8) adopts a novel structure type which consists of heteronuclear, distorted icosahedral clusters which form pentagonal antiprismatic columns. Connection of these columns by Ta-Ta and Ta-Te/Se contacts yields tetrahedrally close-packed layers.
