-The trans-configurated title compounds of type (III) are isolated from 3:1 mixtures of trans/cis isomers. The mesomorphous properties of (III) depend on the existence of halogen atoms in α-position to the carbonyl group and the length of the 5-alkyl substituent at the dioxane ring.
