β¦ Synopsis
Synthesis, Structure, and Magnetic Properties of NaTiO 2 .
-Oxides with nominal composition NaTiO 2 are prepared and their properties are discussed. Na 0.99 TiO 2 is analyzed with powder XRD and has a hexagonal room temp. structure (Ξ±-NaFeO 2 -type, space group Rr3rm, Z = 3) having hexagonal lattice parameters. At 5 K the structure is monoclinic (space group C2/m, Z = 2). This transition is responsible for the change in magnetic susceptibility between 200 and 250 K which is 4.7β’10 -4 emu/mol and falls to less than 60% at low temperatures. The structural phase transition is apparently driven by an increase in Ti-Ti bonding on cooling and can be interpreted as a cooperative second-order Jahn-Teller distortion. -(CLARKE, S.
