Synthesis of the First 2',6 Bridged Penams.

-The desired title compound (XII) is prepared from either the benzhydryl or the benzyl esters of 6-aminopenicillanic acid. This secondary tricyclic amine can be further functionalized to give tertiary amines, corresponding sulfones, and carboxylate salts.
