✦ Synopsis

Synthesis of Some 3-Aroyl-4-alkylbenzopyran-1H-1-ones and Mechanistic Studies on the Synthesis of 3-Aroyl-4-arylbenzopyran-1H-1-ones.

-Base-mediated reaction of o-acylbenzoic acids (I) with bromoacetophenones (II) gives selectively the title 3-aroylbenzopyranones (III) (7 examples), while similar reaction of o-aroylbenzoic acids (IV) with bromoacetophenones gives selectively the intramolecular cyclization products (V) (6 examples). A plausible reaction mechanism involving a ring contraction of initially formed benzopyran adducts to phthalides (V) is proposed.
