Synthesis of Retinals Fluorinated at Odd-Numbered Side-Chain Positions and of the Corresponding Fluorobacteriorhodopsins.

-A series of title compounds such as the 9-demethyl-9-fluororetinal ( XIV) is prepared by the scheme depicted. These stable trans-fluororetinals are incubated with bacterio-opsin.

The fluorinated retinals provide artificial pigments with near normal absorption properties showing that any electrostatic interactions between the F atoms and protein groups are sufficient to prevent normal binding. The new pigments have smaller opsin shifts than the natural bacteriorhodopsin. -(FRANCESCH, A.;
