Synthesis of Novel Tetrahydro-3H-benzothieno(2,3-d)imidazoles. -An unambiguous synthesis of the novel substituted benzothienoimidazoles (IX) starting from commercially available 2-aminobenzothiophene-3-carboxylate (I) is given. Key steps in the sequence are the direct introduction of the protected amino-group at the C-3 position via a modified Curtius rearrangement and subsequent intramolecular cyclization of the 1,2-diacylaminobenzothiophenes (VIII) thus obtained. -(JOHNSON, C.
