-Simple and efficient syntheses of (Z)-3-benzylidenepiperazinedione ( VII) in both racemic and optically active forms are described. Compound (VII) is shown to be a useful intermediate for the effective construction of novel octahydrobenzazocintrione derivatives having a methyl group at the C-2 position (cf.
