✦ Synopsis

Synthesis of Carbonyl and Dicarbonyl Compounds from Organometallic Reagents and N-Imidazolium-N-methyl Amides and Bis-amides.

-Condensation of the imidazolium salts (I) and (IV) with carboxylic acids in the presence of the 1,3,4,2-oxadiazaphosphole shown in the scheme results in efficient formation of amides of type (III) and (VI) or bis-amides such as (XIV) (synthesis of the bis-amides with Z= -(CH2) n-; n ≀ 2 is not successful). The amides react selectively with organometallics to afford ketones or diketones and with iBu2AlH to give aldehydes or dialdehydes in high yields. -(
