✦ Synopsis
Synthesis of a Double Alkoxide Precursor to Spinel (MgAl2O4) Directly from Al(OH)3, MgO, and Triethanolamine and Its Pyrolytic Transformation to Spinel.
-Pure spinel powders of surface areas as high as 160 m2/g are prepared in a one-pot process according to the scheme by pyrolysis of the intermediate precursor (IV). The precursor (IV) is obtained in 30% ceramic yield. Pyrolysis of (IV) for 2 h at 700 • C in air yields a solid solution of γ-Al2O3-MgAl2O4 containing ¡ 5 wt.% of MgCO3. Transformation of the solid solution to spinel is a function of pyrolysis time and temperature.
