Synthesis of 5-[(Indol-2-on-3-yl)methyl]-2,2-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane-4,6diones and Spirocyclopropyloxindole Derivatives. Potential Aldose Reductase Inhibitors.

-Indoles (I) are transformed into indolyl derivatives (IV) following a literature process. Subsequent reaction with 1 equiv. of NBS generates ketones (V) and, surprisingly, in the case of (IVd) bromo derivative (VI). Reaction with 2 equiv. of NBS yields unusual spiro compounds (VII).
