β¦ Synopsis
Synthesis of 3-Acetoxyazetidin-2-ones and 3-Hydroxyazetidin-2-ones with Antifungal and Antibacterial Activity.
-The preparation and biological activity of a series of title compounds (III), (IV) and related compounds are investigated. Of particular interest are the title compounds (X) containing a free carboxylic acid group on the N-1 aryl ring. The novel bicyclic structure (XII) is also synthesized. Azetidinones (X) show moderate antibacterial activity. A number of monocyclic and bicyclic Ξ²-lactam derivatives display useful antifungal activity against a number of pathogenic fungi, cf. ( IVa), (IIIb), (VI), (Xa), and (XIII). -(WALSH, O.
