Synthesis, Crystal Structure and Optical Investigation of the New Phosphates: Na7Mg13Ln(PO4)12 (Ln: La, Eu). -Single crystals of the new title compounds are prepared by reaction of Na2CO3, MgCO3, Ln2O3 (Ln: La, Eu), and NH4H2PO4 using Na2MoO4 as a flux (Pt crucible, 1273 K, 2 h). The isotypic compounds crystallize in the orthorhombic space group Cmc21 with Z = 4. Their three-dimensional covalent framework basically consists of [Mg 4 MP 4 O 22 ] β (M: Mg, Na) layers which are interconnected by [Mg4LnP4O32]β undulating chains. The resulting framework contains six distinct cavities which are occupied by Na + cations. The compounds Na7Mg13La1-x Eux(PO4)12 (x = 0, 0.02, 0.1, 1) are further characterized by diffuse reflectance and pho-
