Synthesis, Crystal Structure, and IR Investigations of ((NH3)5V-O-V( NH3)5)I4•NH3 and ((NH3)5Ti-O-Ti(NH3)5)I4•NH3.
-Single crystals of the novel title compounds are prepared by room-temp. reaction of VI2 or TiI3, resp., with liquid ammonia in the presence of traces of water or oxygen. XRD results show that the isostructural compounds (orthorhombic, Pbca, Z = 4) contain distorted corner-sharing M-centered ((NH3)5M)2O double octahedra (M: V, Ti) linked via the O atom. The double octahedra exhibit an eclipsed conformation which leads to repulsive interaction between the NH3
