Synthesis and Study of Organic Nitrates of Heterofunctional Series. Part 4. Synthesis and Some Chemical Properties of 4,4-Bis(nitroxymethyl)-2-phenyl-2-oxazoline and -2-oxazolinium Nitrate. -O-Nitration of bis(hydroxymethyl)oxazoline (I) using an equimolar mixture of conc. HNO 3 and Ac 2 O occurs without oxazole ring cleavage to furnish the title bis(nitroxymethyl)oxazolinium salt (II). Acid hydrolysis of this salt, the corresponding free base (III) as well as starting oxazoline (I) gives tris(hydroxymethyl)aminomethane derivatives [cf. (IV), (V)].
