✦ Synopsis

Synthesis and Relative Configuration of a C-4 Branched Sugar, a Component of the Lipooligosaccharide LOS-III from Mycobacterium gastri.

-For a general route to C-4 branched sugars, a connection between C-4 and C-7 is necessary. This bond formation is achieved by a SmI2 promoted coupling of the ketone (II) with the acid chloride from (IV). The synthetic method described renders possible the preparation of other branched carbohydrates which may be of high interest for organic synthesis.
