Synthesis and Crystal Structure of a Novel Lamellar Barium Derivative: Ba(VOPO4)2•4H2O. Synthetic Pathways for Layered Oxovanadium Phosphate Hydrates M(VOPO4)2•nH2O. -Based on the synthesis of the novel title compound Ba(VOPO4)2• 4H2O (I), prepared in 80% yield under soft hydrothermal conditions from a mixture of V, V2O5, Ba(OAc)2, H3PO4, and H2O at 200 • C, a generalized procedure for the preparation of layered M(VOPO4)2• nH2O compounds in reasonable yields is presented. Starting from simple models such as the partial charge model and the valence matching principle, layered M(VOPO4)2•nH2O (M: Na, K, Ca, Sr, Pb, Ni) are isolated as single phases in 60-90% yield. The structure of (I) ( monoclinic, Pn, Z = 1) can be derived from that of the lamellar solid VOPO4•2H2O with Ba2+ located in the interlamellar space.
