Synthesis and Crystal Structure of a Barium Zinc Vanadyl Phosphate, BaZn(VO)(PO4)2, Containing ((VO)PO4) Layers.

-Single crystals of the title compound are prepared by solid state reaction of a prereacted mixture of BaCO3 and P2O5 (800 โ€ข C, 24 h, air) with ZnO, V2O3, and V2O5 (780 โ€ข C, 72 h, evacuated quartz tube). BaZn(VO)(PO4)2 crystallizes in the orthorhombic space group Pbca with Z = 8 (single crystal XRD). The structure is characterized by layers of PO4 tetrahedra and square VO1+5 pyramids connected by layers of PO4 and ZnO4 tetraheda. The resulting tunnel structure is filled by the Ba2+ ions.
