Syntheses of New Isodethiaazacephems as Potent Antibacterial

Agents.

-The syntheses of racemic title compounds (I) and (II) are achieved as described with subsequent deprotection of (IV), (VI), and (VII) to generate azacephems (Ia)-(Ic). In comparison with parent compound (Ia), the antibacterial activity (tested in vitro against five pathogenic microorganisms) of compounds (Ib) and, especially, (Ic) is remarkably enhanced due to the effective leaving ability of their mesylate and triflate moieties. An [1,4]-elimination mechanism for the reaction of these azacephems with the target enzymes is proposed.
