Stabilization by Hydrogen. Synthetic and Structural Studies of the Zintl Phase Ba5Ga6H2.
-The phase formerly reported as Ba5Ga6 can be prepared only in the presence of hydrogen. Structure redetermination by single crystal XRD and time-of-flight neutron powder diffraction experiments give evidence for the presence of the ternary compound Ba3Ga6H2 (hexagonal, P3c1, Z = 2). It consists of isolated slightly distorted Ga8-6 octahedra. The Ba2+ cations lie over all edges of the octahedron creating two types of tetrahedral voids suitable for hydride ions.
