✦ Synopsis
Spontaneously Passivated Films on Sputter-Deposited Cr-Ti Alloys in 6 M HCl Solution.
-The extremely high corrosion resistance of sputter-deposited Cr-Ti alloys in 6 M HCl solution open to air at 30 • C is studied by both conventional and angle-resolved XPS. The latter gives information on the concentration gradient throughout the passive film which forms spontaneously. Due to the preferential oxidation of Ti in both the air formed and spontaneously formed passive film, the films are slightly enriched in Ti ions and the underlying alloy surfaces are rich in Cr and deficient in Ti. The formation of a film consisting of a homogeneous double oxyhydroxide of Cr 3+ and Ti 4+ is responsible for the corrosion resistance of the alloys. -
