-In the presence of TmsCN/BF 3 •OEt 2 title acetals undergo substitution without ring opening. Under acidic aqueous conditions, however, the acetal (IIIc) undergoes ring opening, whereas the homologue (IIId) does it not. Similar results are obtained by acid-catalyzed alcoholysis. -(CHIBA, TOSHIRO;
