Rb 5 Hg 19 : A New Defect Variant of the BaAl 4 Structure Type.

-The new intermetallic title compound is prepared by reaction of the elements (520→440 K, 4 weeks). Rb 5 Hg 19 crystallizes in the tetragonal space group I4/m with Z = 2 (single crystal XRD). The structure, which represents a new defect variant of the BaAl 4 type, is based on distorted 4 4 nets of Hg 4 rectangles and squares forming pyramids with additional Hg atoms. Each fifth Hg-Hg group is replaced by a single Hg atom resulting in strong vertical and horizontal distortions of the 4 4 nets.
