Rare-Earth Mixed-Valence Vanadium Oxides with Superlattice Structures of Calcium Ferrite. -The novel compounds α-and β-YbV4O8 are prepared by solid state reaction of the binary oxides at 1973 and 1673 K, resp., and the structure of a single crystal of the α-phase and of a twinned one of the β-phase are determined by XRD. The three-dimensional V-O frameworks of α-YbV4O8 (monoclinic, P121/1, Z = 4) and of . beta.-YbV4O8 (monoclinic, P21/n11) are similar to the Fe-O framework in the orthorhombic CaFe2O4. Yb3+ ions occupy half of the Ca2+ sites in an ordered manner, which results in superlattice structures of Y.;
