β¦ Synopsis
Quaternization at the Picolinic Carbon. Application to the Synthesis of Pyridylalkanecarboxylic Acids. -Two different methods are applied to construct the quaternary center of title acids such as (V) and (VIII). The first is based on the deprotonation at the picolinic carbon of 2-(Ξ±,Ξ±-dialkyl)pyridines using the superbasic mixture. The second route involves the one-pot acetylation/cyanoethylation procedure to yield ketonitrile (XII) followed by an quaternization of the picolinic carbon with alkyl halides. Both routes give very good yields.
