-The title compounds (VIII) are synthesized by the Knoevenagel reaction of aldehyde (VI) with phenylnitromethane (VII). Only traces of (Z)-isomers of (VIII) are found in the reaction mixtures, but can be obtained in a 4:3 ratio by UV irradiation of the (E)-forms. -(AULASKARI,
