Photoisomerization of 3H-Azepines.

-The interesting title reaction is investigated leading to compounds ( II) as the only volatile products. In the cyclohepta-1,3,5-triene series the corresponding carba-analogues to (III) are the major products. Mechanistical aspects are discussed in detail. The structures of (II) are determined by spectroscopic methods and independent synthesis. During the synthesis of the starting materials an unexpected transformation of the amidine (Ib) to the imidate (Ic) is found, which can be also used for the preparation of (IIc) from ( IIb). -(
