Photolysis of esters (I) and (II) adsorbed on NaY zeolite gives the ortho Fries rearrangement products, whereas photolysis of (I) and (II) adsorbed on ZSM-5 zeolite gives only toluene and phenols in the case of (Ia) and (IIa) but Fries rearrangement and decarbonylation products in the case of (Ib) and (IIb).
