Particle Size Effects on the Thermal Behavior of Maghemite Synthesized by Flame Pyrolysis.
-The particle size of maghemite (ฮณ-Fe2O3) powder, prepared by flame pyrolysis of iron-containing solutions, decreases with decreasing Fe3+-concentration in the solution. Heating of powders with particle sizes above 15 nm in Ar atmosphere leads to a transformation of maghemite to hematite (ฮฑ-Fe2O3), while smaller particles transform into magnetite (Fe3O4). This phenomenon is attributed to adsorbed or incorporated reducing carboxylate groups formed during powder synthesis. Reaction mechanisms with maghemite particles are discussed. -(GRIMM, S.; STELZNER, T.; LEUTHAEUSSER,
