✦ Synopsis

Oxidative Alkylation of Azoles. Part 5. Synthesis of 4-Nitro-N-chloroimidazole and Its Reaction with Methyl Iodide. -Chlorination of 4-nitroimidazole (I) in alkaline solution affords the 4-nitro-Nchloroimidazole (II) in almost quantitative yield. Chloroimidazole (II) undergoes oxidative alkylation with MeI to give the monomethylimidazoles (IV) and (V) or the dimethylimidazolium salt (VI) depending on the reaction temperature.
