β¦ Synopsis
Oxidation of UO2 in Molten Alkali-Metal Carbonate Mixtures: Formation of Uranates and Diuranates.
-The title reaction is studied systematically in the temp. range 723-1123 K under various oxidizing conditions. In the presence of oxygen a mixture of mono-and diuranates is formed. At high temp. monouranates are favored. The reaction rate is markedly increased by addition of alkali metal nitrates. Oxygen bubbling through the melt has a higher stimulating effect on the reaction rate than air bubbling or just stirring of the melt. The oxidation of UO2 proceeds via formation of intermediate peroxide and/or superoxide ions in the carbonate melt. -
