Oxidation Kinetics of Calcium-Doped Palladium Powders. -With regard to a detection of mechanisms through which Ca improves the oxidation behavior of Pd powders, the oxidation kinetics of Ca-containing Pd powders, prepared by spray pyrolysis, are studied in the temp. range 600 to 675 β’ C using TGA. As shown by TEM images, the conversion of Pd to PdO seems to proceed from the particle surface to the interior. A mechanism is suggested in which the oxidation of pure Pd proceeds by chemisorption and diffusion of oxygen, formation of substoichiometric oxide and its conversion to Pd(II)O and is limited by the diffusion of oxygen through substoichiometric PdO and/ or Pd(II)O. According to the kinetic data Ca improves the oxidation resistance of Pd powders probably by inhibiting oxygen diffusion through metal oxide layers around Pd. -(JAIN, S.; KODAS, T.
