✦ Synopsis

The title compounds are the missing links between the normal polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and the highly strained, closed polyhedral fullerenes. The structure of compound (VII), reported for the first time, is not found in fullerenes smaller than C78. The best approach to (III) by thermal cyclodehydrogenation is the controlled generation of aryl radicals by homolysis of C-Br bonds. -(
