✦ Synopsis

Novel Rhodium-Catalyzed Cyclic Carbonylation of 2-Phenylethynylbenzoates Leading to Indeno(1,2-c)isocoumarin. -Pentaethynylbenzoates (I) having a neighboring ester group undergo simultaneous carbonylation of the acetylene, C-H bond activation of the phenyl group and C-O bond fission of the ester group upon treatment with carbon monoxide and Rh6(CO)16 as a catalyst, to give coumarin derivative (III) and the hydrogenated products
