✦ Synopsis
Arms and Their Alkali Metal Salts. Synthesis and Structural Studies.
-Structural investigation by 1 H NMR spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction shows that title compounds (I) and (II) are preorganized for metal ion complexation with the sidearms oriented towards the macrocyclic polyether cavities due to intramolecular NH•••O bonding. Structural studies of their alkali metal salts demonstrate cooperative coordination of the metal cation by the macrocyclic polyether and the ionized sidearm that serves as counterion with the negative charge localized on one of the o-nitro groups. Extensive studies of metal ion recognition by these new chromogenic proton-ionizable lariat ethers are under way.
