New Metathesis Methodology Leading to Angularly-Fused Polycyclic Quinones and Related Compounds.

-The dual annulation sequence represents a general, regiospecific route to the title compounds. Cyclobutenones of type (VI), (XI), and (XVI), prepared starting from squarate (I) by variation of the lithio arene and the addition order of the lithio compounds, readily undergo a facile ring closure. The cyclobutane-fused quinones derived from this cyclization undergo a new photofragmentation reaction leading to aryl ring formation of the desired products. -(HEILEMAN, M.
