โœฆ Synopsis

MoRuS and MoRuSe catalysts for the electrochemical reduction of oxygen are prepared from Ru3(CO)12, Mo(CO)6, and S or Se in xylene at 136 . degree.C and subsequent treatment with Ar or H2 at 350 โ€ข C. These catalysts, the structure of which resembles that of commonly used hydrodesulfurization catalysts, are attractive as cathodes in direct methanol fuel cells (DMFC) and in solid-polymer electrolyte cells. Exchange of S for Se results in a higher catalytic activity at high current densities. Ru sites are identified as active catalytic centers. Deposition onto carbon supports yields homogenously distributed particles of 5nm size. Unlike the conventional Pt-based electode, the new MoRuS-based electrode is not prone to depolarization due to methanol crossover from the anode of the DMFC. -(TRAPP, V.; CHRISTENSEN, P.;
