New Barium Niobium Sulfides. Part 2. Preparation of BaNb2.85S6.23 and BaNb5.33S11.0.

-Pure single phase BaNb2.85S6.23 (I) is prepared from a starting sulfide, obtained within 3 d from BaCO3 and Nb2O5 (Nb/Ba = 2.85) in CS2 at 750 • C, by controlling the partial pressure of sulfur. Single phase BaNb5.33S11.0 (II) is synthesized by heating the starting sulfide (Nb/Ba = 5.33) with extra sulfur for 5 d at 1000 • C. The powder XRD patterns of (I) and (II) are indexed in a hexagonal setting, and the electron diffraction data reveal a superstructure of 3a x 3a.
