✦ Synopsis
Neither Electron-Precise nor in Accordance with Wade-Mingos Rules: The Ternary Cluster Anion [Ni2Sn7Bi5] 3-
•en and Ni(cod)2 in en (room temperature, 3 h) followed by toluene layering (2 d, 15% yield). The compound crystallizes in the monoclinic space group Cc with Z = 4 (single crystal XRD). The [Ni 2 Sn 7 Bi 5 ] 3-cluster anion contains two interstitial Ni atoms forming a dumbbell with a Ni-Ni bond of 244.4 pm that is embedded within a 12-atom Sn7Bi5 cage consisting of two tetragonal antiprisms sharing a Sn4 face. Both the electron number and the topology, including the uncommon square faces, disagree with the known features of Zintl anions observed to date.
